Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which interferes with light passing through the eye to the retina. In most cases, the development of a cataract is generally part of the normal aging process but is not the only cause. Trauma or injury to the eye, certain medications, diabetes and other less common medical conditions may also cause cataracts. A contrast sensitivity test is performed in our office to determine how much your vision has been affected by a cataract. When decreased vision affects your everyday lifestyle, a cataract should be treated.

Advanced Cataract Surgery
Recent advances have made cataract surgery safer, faster, more comfortable and more precise than ever before. Dr. Roth is leading the field, using the latest surgical techniques and state-of-the-art lenses.

For many patients, advanced cataract surgery allows patients to see near, far and everything in between without reading glasses or bifocals. Advanced cataract surgery uses the latest intraocular lenses (IOLs) which are designed to deliver precise, predictable results and improved quality of distance vision.

Cataract removal is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. You will remain awake throughout the procedure, but feel no pain, many patients report having no memory of the procedure at all. Dr. Roth will make a tiny incision and remove the clouded lens. The IOL will be inserted through the same incision into the lens capsule of your eye. This tiny incision, which rarely requires sutures, will heal quickly with little or no discomfort.

Dr. Roth selects the finest and most advanced IOLs for his procedures. The TECNIS® Multifocal IOL is ideal for adult patients without presbyopia, a condition where the lens loses its ability to focus. The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL is a similar lens suitable for patients with both cataracts and presbyopia. Both lenses are ideal for patients who hope to achieve improved vision at all distances and light levels without the aid of glasses. These advanced lenses are made of soft, flexible silicon or acrylic, which makes the implantation easier for the surgeon and more comfortable for the patient.

These advanced lenses have undergone extensive clinical trials and most patients report high levels of satisfaction and many do not require glasses after surgery.

Currently there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, the only way to achieve clear vision is through cataract surgery. Additionally, we offer related treatments for secondary cataracts, astigmatism and near vision.
